David Albert Vaughan was born in Rhyl, Flintshire, North Wales in June 1898.

The 1911 Census shows that the family lived at 12 Warren Road, Rhyl, Flintshire.  The head of the family was Edward Vaughan aged 49, a Joiner.  His wife Mary Vaughan (nee Dowell) aged 47 and their 8 (eight) children – William E Vaughan aged 22, a Bricklayer, Gladys Vaughan aged 18, Thomas David Vaughan aged 16, a Confectionery Shop Assistant, Walter H Vaughan aged 15, David Albert Vaughan aged 13, Vernon A Vaughan aged 11, Arthur Eaton Vaughan aged 6 and Doris Eva Vaughan aged 4 years.

Following the outbreak of the First World War David enlisted at the Drill Hall, Flint, Flintshire, with the 2nd Battalion, South Wales Borderers.

On 2 January 1920, a payment of £14. 10s. 7d. was made by the War Office to Mr Edward Vaughan, which was made as £7. 10s. 7d. being monies owed to his son David and £7. 0s. 0d, which was recorded as a War Gratuity.
