Norman, Charles Ernest

Charles Norman was born on 3 July 1887 in Rhyl, Flintshire, North Wales.

The 1901 Census shows that the family lived at 10 Clwyd Street, Rhyl, Flintshire.  The head of the family was Ann Norman (nee Bevan) aged 49, a widow.  She had three sons and one daughter – Harry Norman aged 20, who was employed as a Plumber, Charles (Charlie) Norman aged 18, an Apprentice Joiner, George Payne Norman aged 14, a Printer’s Assistant and Elizabeth J Norman aged 11 years.

The family later lived at Upton House, High Street, Rhyl, Flintshire.

During late March 1912, Charles embarked the Motor Vessel ‘Megantic’ at Liverpool for a new life in Canada, arriving at Halifax, Nova Scotia on 7 April 1912.

On Friday 12 February 1915, he enlisted at Carleton, Ottowa with 5th Brigade, Canadian Field Artillery (Canadian Expeditionary Force).

On the night of 3rd/4th September 1918, an enemy aeroplane dropped six bombs on the wagon lines of his company, which was South East of Cagnicourt to the North West of Sains – les – Marquion.  Charles was hit in the head by a shrapnel splinter and died immediately.

The 1919 National Probate Calendar, which was administered on 12 April 1919, stated that Charles Norman of 442 Somerset Street, Ottowa, Canada, had left the sum of £205. 11s. 0d. to his widowed mother Mrs Ann Norman.

He is also remembered on a Remembrance plaque at The Royal Alexandra Hospital, Marine Drive, Rhyl, Flintshire and on The North Wales Heroes Memorial Arch, Deiniol Road, Bangor, North Wales.

There is a Flintshire Roll of Honour Card for Charles at the County Archives Office, Hawarden, Flintshire, which was completed by Francis Jones on 30 September 1919.
