Herbert Lloyd was born on 3 June 1895 in Ruabon, Denbighshire.

The 1901 Census shows that the family lived at 3 Queen Street, Cefn, Wrexham, Denbighshire.  The head of the family was David Jones aged 45, a Coal Miner.  His wife Ann Lloyd aged 42 and their (7) seven children – Lizzie Ann Lloyd aged 18, Joseph Owen Lloyd aged 16, who was also employed as a Coal Miner, Robert W Lloyd aged 13, Norman Lloyd aged 11, Herbert Lloyd aged 7, Emlyn Lloyd aged 5 and Maggie Lloyd aged 10 weeks.

By 1911, Herbert Lloyd was employed as a House Painter and lived as a Boarder at 40 Bedford Street, Rhyl, Flintshire.

He enlisted at the Recruitment Centre, Rhyl as Trooper 494 with the Denbighshire Hussars Yeomanry, but later transferred to the Machine Gun Corps.
