Joseph Edward Wynne was born in Mostyn.  His family details are a little complicated. According to his Commonwealth War Grave Certificate his mother was Jane E Wynne and he had been born in 1883.

He appeared on the census of 1891 living with his family in Garden Row Mostyn. Head of the household was Robert Williams aged 46 a General Labourer who had been born in Denbigh. Robert’s wife was Mary Williams aged 46 who had been born in Liverpool. Joseph E Wynne aged 4 was listed as a ‘Stepson’ who had been born in Mostyn. (Joseph’s birth year according to this source was 1887) Also listed was William Lloyd another ‘stepson’ who was 21 and married. Jane E Lloyd aged 20 was a married stepdaughter who had been born in Bagillt.

In the census of 1911 the family was still in Garden Row. Robert Williams was 63, a Dock Labourer in The Iron Works. His wife of 30 years was 63 year old Mary. The census form says that no children had been born to this marriage. Joseph Edward Wynne was listed as ‘Grandson’. He was 23 and a Domestic Gardener. Two other ‘Grandsons ‘ were recorded in the household. John Herbert Lloyd was 18 and Robert Lloyd was 10.

We know, from The Commonwealth war Grave Certificate that Joseph married. His wife was listed on the certificate as M E Wynne.

UK Soldiers Who Died in The Great war accessible on www.ancestry.co.uk confirms Joseph’s regimental details at the top of this page. It adds that he enlisted in Mostyn. This source says that he was formerly Private 202970 of the Welsh regiment and it is this source that says he was ‘killed in action’. His medal card also on Ancestry lists his two medals.

There is an index card for Joseph Edward Wynne in The Flintshire Roll of Honour in The County record office in Hawarden. It gives the address Mount Villas Mostyn and confirms his regimental details. The card tells us that he served for one year and that he was killed in action. The card was signed on 2nd October 1919 by J Bithell.
