Thomas was born in 1878. The census of 1881 records him living with his family at Caindwr Llanarmon in Denbighshire. Head of the household was Edward Evans aged 42, a Carpenter. His wife Mary was also 42. Their listed children were Ann 12, Robert 10, Edward H 7, John 5 and Thomas who was 3.

The next census in 1891 records the family still in Llanarmon. Edward Evans and his wife Mary were then 52. He was still a Carpenter. The listed children were Robert 20 – a Carpenter’s assistant, John 15 was a tailor’s Apprentice. Thomas 13 and Mary Lloyd 8 were both at school.

In 1901 the household still in Llanarmon comprised of Edward and Mary both 63. He was a self employed Carpenter. Still listed at home were Thomas 23 also a Carpenter and two single daughters Annie 32 and Mary 18.

The 1911 census places Thomas aged 33 living with his widowed mother Mary aged72 yrs at Llanarmon, Mold. He was a carpenter. This form tells us that Mary had given birth to 9 children but that one had died.

We know that Thomas married some time after 1911 and his wife’s name was Maud. There is an index card for him in the Flintshire Roll of Honour at The County Record Office in Hawarden. The address given on the card was Oakfield Cottage, Gwernymynydd and the card bears the name Mrs M Evans.

UK Soldiers who Died in The Great War 1914 -19 accessible on www.ancestry.co.uk tells us that he was born in Llanarmon and resided in Gwernymynydd. He enlisted in Mold. The regimental details at the top of this page are confirmed. This source tells us that he ‘Died’ at Home. (As opposed to being killed in action or dying of wounds). This suggests that he died of illness or an accident. So far we have not found any medal details for him.

UK Register of Soldiers’ Effects in which the army calculated monies owed to deceased soldiers includes an entry for Thomas Evans. It tells us that he died in the Royal Infirmary at Chester on 14th April 1916. A total of £9 ..11sh .. 7d was paid to widow Maud for herself and children.
