He was born in 1884 in Buckley. The 1901 census lists him living in Buckley in Brook St, Lane End. He was a 17 year old coal miner – a waggoner, working below ground. He was a single man living with his widowed mother Hannah, 39 yrs and his two sisters  Elizabeth 12 and Selina 11.

In the 1911 census we find him living in Mancot a 27 year old stonebreaker. He was married to Mary Elizabeth and they had a one day old daughter, Violet. Mary Elizabeth was a Mold girl having been born in Milford Street.

Some time after Joseph’s death, Mary Elizabeth remarried and her name became Mary Elizabeth McDermott and her address once again became Milford St (No. 44).

Dozinghem Cemetery 7th October 2013. There is another Flintshire soldier buried here. He is Edwin Wolverson of Connah’s Quay/Shotton.
