Harris, Harry Elijah

His War Grave Certificate tells us he was the son of Louis and Sarah Harris of 33 Bridge Street, Mold.  He was born on 10th April 1886

We have found the family on the 1901 census, living at County buildings, Mold.  Louis Harris the father was 57 and Sarah the mother was 59.  The children were Edith 22, Annie 20 and Harry was 15, a grocer’s shop boy.

In 1911 the family was still living in the County Buildings. Louis was a caretaker, 68 yrs working for the County Council. His wife Sarah was there – now aged 70 and one child Annie now 27 was the only one still at home.

We don’t know when Harry left Wales for Canada but he enlisted in the Canadian Expeditianary Force in Toronto on 11th November 1914. His attestation papers tell us that he was an electrician by trade but also that he had previously been a serving soldier with the 23rd Royal Welsh Fusiliers. he was described as 5 ft 11 inches with a dark complexion  with blue eyes and light hair. We think it says that he had tattoos of flags on each forearm.
