Harold was born in 1891. He was recorded on the census of 1891 living with his family at Higher Wych, Isycoed. The head of the household and Harold’s father was Job Jones a 47 year old Agricultural Worker. His wife was Ellen Jones who was 39. Their listed children were Job 3, Joseph 2 and Harold 1. There was a 14 year old servant – Mary Griffith.

Little had changed by the next census of 1901. They were still living in the same place. Job Jones 57, was listed as a farmer. Ellen was 49 and there was one more child. Job was 13, Joseph 12, Harold 10 and George was 9.

In the 1911 census Harold was not listed at home. I believe I have located him at the home of farmer Robert Johnson. A 20 year old Harold Jones who had been born in Isycoed, was recorded as a Cowman at the farm – Agden House, Agden Whitchurch, Salop. (Cautionary note. This is an educated guess and I have no real proof that it is the Harold Jones. He is, however, the right age, was born in the right place and had an agricultural background. Seems compelling to assume it is him).

UK Soldiers Who Died in The Great War 1914 -19, accessible on www.ancestry.co.uk confirms his birth place as Higher Wych. It also confirms his regimental details as at the top of this page. It tells us that he enlisted in Manchester. This source confirms he was killed in action in France and Flanders. His medal index card, also on ‘ancestry’ lists his two medals.

There is an index card for Harold in The Flintshire Roll of Honour at The County Record Office in Hawarden. It details his regimental details, gives the address Higher Wych and tells us that he served from the 29th September 1916. It says he was killed at Pilkhem Ridge at Passchendaele.
