Samuel Jones, was born in 1891, just in time to be recorded on the 1891 census with his family. Head of the household was Charles Jones, age 38 and a Coal Miner, born in Hawarden, Flintshire, Wife Jane Jones was age 34 and had been born in Oswestry. Their home was in Ewloe Green, Hawarden. Daughter Rosa was age 6 and son John was age 4, both born in Mold, Flintshire. Son Chas. Hy. Jones was age 1, son Samuel age 6 months were both born in Hawarden. A nephew, Robt. Chas. Lewis, age 23, single and a Coal Miner, who had been born in Mold, was also living there.
In 1901 the family were living near the Mission Church, Ewloe Green, Hawarden,Cheshire. Head of the household was still Charles Jones age 48, a Coal Miner, born in Buckley, Flintshire. Wife Jane was now age 43, born Shropshire, all the rest of the family were born in Buckley, Flintshire. Their daughter Rosena was single, age 16, a Domestic Servant, so John W. was age 14, a Labourer at the Coal Mine, son Charles H. Was age 11, son Samuel was age 10, son Richard E. was age 8, son George Thos. Was age 6 and baby son Frank was age 1.
There is no specific address for the family in 1911, except Ewloe Green,Flintshire. Charles was still head of the household and now age 58, but a General labourer, not working, this time he states that he was born in Ewloe Green, wife Jane was now age 53, no place of birth given. They had been married 27 years, 11 children had been born to them, 3 of whom had died. Son John W. was now age 25, single and a Collier, Waggoner. Son Charles H. was now age 22, single and a Collier, Fitter, son Samuel was age 20, single and also a Collier, Fitter., son Richard Edward was age 18, single and a Brick Yard Labourer, son George Thomas was age 16, a Pottery Labourer, son Frank was age 11 and at School. According to this census all the children, except John , who had been born in Mold, were born in Ewloe Green, Flintshire.
His Flintshire WW1 Index Card (Ewloe F5) tells us that his period of service was 1 year and the card was signed by a J, Jones, perhaps, his mother, on the 30th October, 1919. He was age 25.
