Davies, John Maldwyn

John Maldwyn Davies was born in 1898 at Leeswood, Flintshire. He was recorded on the 1901 census when his family were living at 32, Long Row, Mold Rural, Leeswood, Flintshire.  His father David Davies 39 was a Collier, (Hewer) who had been born in Mold, Flintshire.  His wife Mary  37  had been born in Gwernymynydd, Flintshire.  Their children, were all born in Mold were listed as  William T.13  a Labourer in the Colliery,  Margaret  11,  Ellis  6, John M.  3 and  Allen D. was 1.

The 1911 census tells us that the family had moved to Airlie Terrace Leeswood Mold, Flintshire.  The Father David  49 was still a Coal Miner, Underground.   His wife of 27 years, Mary Ellen was 47 and a Housekeeper. She had borne 12 children, 10 of whom were still living.  The listed children were  Kate  24  who was  a servant, Lizzie  20,  Ellis was 16 and an Engine Driver Underground,  Maldwyn was 13 and at the County School,  Blodwen was  8,  Howell  6, and Edith was 4.  All the children had been born in Leeswood.

UK, Soldiers Who Died in the Great War, 1914-1919 accessible on www.ancestry.co.uk confirms the regimental information above and tells us that he resided in Queensferry and enlisted in Flint. His medal card also on ‘ancestry’ details his medal entitlement.

There is an index card for John Maldwyn Davies in The Flintshire Roll of Honour at The County Record Office in Hawarden.  The card was completed by S or E Davies and it states  that he died of fever in Salonica 29th October 1918. The address given was  56, Farm Road, Sealand.
