The 1881 and the 1891 censuses show the family of George Ernest Jones living at 4, West View, Hawarden.  His parents were John Jones and Elizabeth Phillips and they married at St. Deniol’s Church in Hawarden on 28th January 1875. They were both ” of Full age” and John was a bachelor, a Boiler Maker who lived in Hawarden. His father John Jones also had been a Boiler Maker, but was deceased.  Elizabeth Phillips, was a spinster, living at The Moor, Hawarden, her father Richard Phillips was a Smith.

George Ernest first appears on a census in  1891.  John Jones was the head of the household. He was 43 and still a Boiler Maker. John’s wife,  Elizabeth was 44. Their listed children were  Elizabeth J. Jones 14, Mary J. 12,  Eliza B. 10,  John J  7 and  George E.4. All the family had been born in Hawarden, Flintshire.

The 1901 census records the family living at Station View, Hawarden.  John Jones, 53 was still a Boilermaker. His wife Elizabeth was 54. The children were listed as follows,  Beatrice, 20, was single and a Dressmaker.  John J. 17 was single and a Commercial Clerk.   George E 14 was a Draper’s Assistant.   A Boarder, Thomas Warburton was living in the household. He was 38 and was a Railway Foreman Platelayer.

In 1911 the family had moved,  to The Limes, Hawarden. John Jones 64 was listed as a Boilermaker Plater.  He and Elizabeth 64, had been married for 37 years and they had 6 children born to them, 1 of whom had died.  The single children still in the household were Eliza Beatrice 30,  and still a Dressmaker.  John James  26,  and a Clerk. George Ernest  23, also a Clerk. Grandson Albert Ernest Parrish was 7.

UK, Soldiers Died in the Great War, 1914-1919 accessible on www.ancestry.co.uk  confirms the regimental information above and tells us his residence and place of enlistment was Liverpool. It has so far proved impossible to find his medal card.

There is an index card for George Ernest Jones in the Flintshire Roll of Honour in The County Record Office in Hawarden.  (Hawarden F 19) The card was completed and signed by George’s brother, John J. Jones, but there was no date of signing. This card gave the  address as “The Limes”, Hawarden. It  confirms his regimental details and adds that his period of service was 9 months.
