Bartley, Edward

Edward Bartley was born about 1882.

He was recorded on the census of 1891 living with his family in Cross Lane, Mold. Head of the household was Joseph Bartley 41 an Agricultural Labourer who had been born in Mold. His wife was Mary Ann, she was 39 and had been born in Nerquis near Mold. Their three listed children had all been born in Mold. Edward was 9, Lucy Ann 7 and Margaret 4.

The census of 1901 records the family living in Tyn y Bryn, Mold. Joseph was 51 and on this census his occupation was ‘Lead Miner’. His wife Margaret was 49. The three children were Edward 19, a Carpenter, Lucy 17 a Dressmaker and Margaret was 10.

By the census of 1911, Edward Bartley was a married man living in Tan y Graig, Gwernaffield. He was 29 and still a carpenter. His wife of 2 years was Margaret who was 26. They had one child. Iorweth was 9 months old and had been born in Conwy.

UK Soldiers who Died in The Great War 1914 -19 accessible on www.ancestry.co.uk confirms the regimental details as above. It tells us that he enlisted in Prescot, Lancashire and this source tells us he was killed in action in France/Flanders. His medal card, also on ‘Ancestry’ details his medal entitlement. There is an index card for him in The Flintshire Roll of Honour in The County Record Office in Hawarden. It gives the address Tan y Graig Gwernaffield and confirms his regimental information.
