Ex-Policeman Daniel HEWITT, who before the war was in the Flintshire Constabulary, stationed at Shotton Ironworks, has now been awarded his third honour for bravery on the field of action. In the first place he was awarded the D.C.M., and promoted to the rank of sergeant on the field. After this he received the French Cross of Honour; and more recently he has had a Russian honour bestowed upon him. Sergt. COUNTY HERALD 4th August 1916 (Page 6 Col 4) – ENEMIES WITH BRITISH TITLES

Mr. Asquith replied in the House of Commons to a question by Mr Swift MacNeil asking whether the British Titles and orders of the Duke of Albany and Prince Albert Schleswig-Holstein and the Duke of Cumberland, who were in arm against this country, would be taken over.

In answer, Mr. Asquith said the matter had been considered by the cabinet.   The Government were in full sympathy with the feeling and opinion of the House, and His Majesty would be asked to take the necessary steps in regard to the titles and orders.   The Lord Chancellor was considering the technical questions of law.
