John William Crump was  born in 1899. (Probable registered birth Qtr June 1899 in district of Whitchurch, Vol 6a page 769)

He was recorded on the census of 1901 living with  his family at Chapel Cottage,Welshampton. Head of the household was Alfred Crump, 36, a Farm Labourer. His wife was Ann Crump 28. Their listed children were John W Crump 3, and Edith A Crump 1.

The 1911 census records a John Crump at a farm in Bradenheath, Whitchurch, Salop. The farmer Thomas Reece 43 was head of the household. His wife was Beatrice and their listed children were Samuel 17, Florence 16, Harold 13, Beatrice11 and Sidney 3. There were three resident servants. Elizabeth Phillips was a 19 year old Dairy Maid. Joseph Done 24 was a Cowman and John Crump 13 was a ‘Cowman’s Boy’

UK soldiers Who Died in The Great War 1914-19 accessible on www.ancestry.co.uk confirms that he was born in Welshampton and that he was in the Royal Warwickshire Regiment as Private 260163. It adds that he enlisted in Ellesmere, Salop. This source tells us he was ‘killed in action’.  His Medal Index card, also on Ancestry, lists his medals and his regiment and number but it is this source that says he had previously been in the King’s Shropshire Light Infantry with another regimental number.

The Army Register of Effects in which they calculated any outstanding monies owed to deceased soldiers, lists his mother Annie as the beneficiary of £6..15s..2d. This source also confirms that he was killed in action.

There is an index card for John Crump in The Flintshire Roll of Honour at The County Record Office in Hawarden. It confirms all the military details at the top of this page and adds that he served for 2 years and 9 months. The card was signed by Vicar F Barry Roberts 19th November 1919. (He completed all the Bettisfield cards).
