Jones, Joseph

Joseph Jones was born in Holywell, Flintshire during 1891.

The 1911 Census tells us that the family lived in Bagillt, Flintshire.  The address is not known.  The head of the family was Humphrey Jones aged 55, a Coal Miner at Bettisfield Colliery.   His wife was Sarah Jones aged 48 and their 7 (seven) listed children  were John Herbert Jones aged 21, Joseph Jones aged 20, who was also a Coal Miner at the Colliery. Eliza Jones aged 19, Oliver Jones aged 16, also a Coal Miner, Alfred Jones aged 11, Albert Jones aged 10 and Humphrey Jones aged 6 Years.

Joseph Jones enlisted with the Regiment during August 1914 at The Drill Hall, Flint.

Joseph Jones arrived in the Balkans with the Battalion at Sulva Bay on Sunday 8th August 1915. He died of wounds two days later on Tuesday 10th August 1915, sustained during an attack on Scimitar Hill. He was aged 24 years. He has no known grave and is remembered on the Helles Memorial in Gallipoli.

He is also remembered on the North Wales Heroes Memorial Arch, Deiniol Road, Bangor, Gwynedd, North Wales.

There is a Flintshire Roll of Honour Card for him at the County Archives Office, Hawarden, which was completed on 8 September 1919 by Albert Jones.  Details of his medals were obtained from ancestry.co.uk
