George Albert Moorcroft was born in Liverpool during 1888.

The 1901 Census states that the family resided at 118 Rupert Street, Everton, Liverpool.  The head of the family was John Moorcroft aged 42, who was employed as a Spinner in a Cotton Mill.   His wife was Martha Jane aged 45 and their 7 (seven) listed children  were Elizabeth Moorcroft aged 19, a Packer in the Blue Ink Works, Sarah Moorcroft aged 15, who was also employed as a Packer, George Albert Moorcroft aged 13, Robert Moorcroft aged 11, John Moorcroft aged 9, Catherine Moorcroft aged 7 and Edith Moorcroft aged 5 years.

Little is known of George’s early life but in 1903 aged 16 he obtained employment in the Merchant Navy, becoming a Ship’s Cook.   During 1906 he served on the cargo ship SS Rowansmoor, which was registered in Liverpool.

In 1908 he married Elizabeth Roberts.  The 1911 Census shows that they lived at 29 Napier Street, Liverpool with their two children – George Moorcroft aged 2 years and Mather Moorcroft aged 12 months.

They did at some time live in Pierces Row, Bagillt, Flintshire.  Nothing further is known.

At the outbreak of war George enlisted in Liverpool as a Private with 2nd Battalion, South Lancashire Regiment. His first Theatre of War was France and he entered it on the 23rd June 1915.  He was killed in action there on the 25th September 1915,  Just 3 months later.

On 4 November 1916 a payment of £2.0s.3d was made by the War Office to Elizabeth Moorcroft, this being monies owed to her husband George.  On 23 October 1919, a further payment which is recorded as a War Gratuity of £4.0s.0d was also made to her.

He is also remembered on the North Wales Heroes Memorial, Deiniol Road, Bangor, Gwynedd, North Wales.
