Jones Daniel

Daniel was born about 1888. He is listed on the 1911 census living at Brooke Terrace Berthengam Holywell. The head of the household was Eliza Jones a 49 year old widow. Her listed children were Daniel 23 a Labourer on a farm, Walter 21 was a Labourer in a Quarry and Mary Jane was 5 and at school. It says on the form that Eliza had given birth to 6 children, 3 of whom had died. The family was bilingual speaking Welsh and English.

There may be a connection with Edward Hughes also named on the Llanasa Memorial. He had the same address as Daniel and on one army form it says his mother was also named Eliza. It may just be a coincidence.

UK Soldiers who Died in The Great War 1914 -19 accessible on www.ancestry.co.uk confirms the regimental details at the top of this page. It adds that he enlisted in Holywell and that he was killed in action in France and Flanders.  His medal index card, also on Ancestry lists his medals and it is this source that quotes a former regimental number 8977.

There is an index card for Daniel in the Flintshire Roll of Honour in The County Record Office in Hawarden which gives the address Brookes Cottage Berthengam, Holywell and which confirms the death date and the regimental details,The card was signed by Eliza Jones on 13th September 1919

Daniel is also named on Llanasa Memorial
